The Dinah K. Somerville Annual Award Scholarship has a deadline of January 31, 2020, which is earlier than the BECA process deadline. Here is a description of the scholarship. 

On behalf of the St. Mary’s County Black History Coalition, Inc. (SMCBHC), two students will be awarded the Dinah K Somerville Scholarship. Each student will receive $1,000, not renewable. Eligible applicants must be a 2020 graduating senior from a St. Mary’s County public, private or home school and be a resident of St. Mary’s County who will attend a two or four-year college in the fall of 2020. Graduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, applicants must complete an essay.  

On behalf of the St. Mary’s County Black History Coalition, Inc. (SMCBHC), the Dinah K Somerville Scholarship Fund will award $1000 to one student attending a trade school. Eligible applicants must be a 2020 graduating senior from a St. Mary’s County public, private or home school and be a resident of St. Mary’s County who will attend a trade or technical school in the fall of 2020. Graduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    Free Application for Federal Student Aid  (FAFSA) – www.FAFSA.gov    This is your starting point. 


This is the starting point to provide and summarize family financial information that will be required for many scholarship applications.  Go online in December to establish your account and passwords.   You should file by January 25 to meet BECA's February 18 deadline. Maryland's has a March 1, 2021, absolute filing deadline to be eligible for aid from the state of Maryland. If you miss this deadline you will not get state aid.   Be sure to use “.gov” in the address.  Other sites will allow you to file the FAFSA but may charge you for it. 


Deadline:  file by Feb. 15 to be considered for money in Maryland.

                        Students who complete their first two years at CSM with a B average or better could be admitted as full time students to the mechanical engineering program of the University of Maryland with classes to be taught at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California, MD.  They would be eligible for participation in a NAWCAD-sponsored cooperative education  program  locally.  The program may  include assistance (up to $4500 per semester for tuition and up to $400 for books) for up to six semesters.  Summer  jobs may be available.  Students participating in the cooperative education program will incur a service obligation for federal civil service employment upon graduation.

                        Pat Kepferle was a 1999 graduate of GMHS who died suddenly from bacterial meningitis on a weekend home from college.  After his death, Maryland passed a bill requiring college freshmen to receive a meningitis vaccination prior to entering college.  Applicant must provide proof  of college acceptance, a personal statement including significant achievements,  a statement of  your financial situation from a parent/guardian,  and a current transcript.

Scholarships for graduating seniors and college students.  Applicants are judged on scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA), community activism, participation in extracurricular activities, and ability to articulate during application interview.  Must be able to demonstrate financial need as well.

Recognizes individuals diagnosed with ADHD.  Applicants must complete an application, two short essays, one recommendation, list of community, volunteer, or extracurricular activities, and provide verification that they have an ADHD diagnosis.  Further application information is available on the website.  Scholarship recipients will receive a year of ADHD coaching   from a ADHD coaching service.

MedStar St. Mary's Hospital provides scholarships in return for service for critical positions, including registered nurses, imaging technologists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, medical records coders, lab technologists, and pharmacists. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 if applying within four years of high school graduation, and will commit to working at MedStar St. Mary’s for a pre-determined length of time after obtaining their educational degree, license, or certification.

Amount: $3,000 per semester for tuition, required books, lab fees and school-appointed uniforms as appropriate, up to a maximum of $24,000 over a four-year period.

                        Merit scholarships from the United Negro College Fund are available to students.  Minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrated financial  need as evidenced by FAFSA.  Most require that you plan to attend a historically black college or university (HBCU).  Several awards are listed on the website with varying awards and application deadlines.

                        Applicants must plan to study agriculture, food science, natural resource sciences or related disciplines at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The program provides full tuition, employment, employee benefits, fees, books, use of  a laptop, printer, and software while on scholarship, room and board each year for 4 years to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree.  Upon completion of degree, there is an obligation for 1 year of service to the USDA for each year of financial support.  Minimum 3.0 GPA as well as demonstrated leadership and community service.

The nomination process is as follows:

  1. Write to your Senator in your junior year of high school, certainly before July 1 of your senior year.
  2. Know the basic requirements.
  3. Take your SAT before applying for nomination.  You will generally need a verbal score of 550 or more and a math score of 600 or better.
  4. Maintain high academic standing (at least the upper 40% of your class).
  5. Maintain first-rate medical condition and proper physical aptitude.
  6. Obtain an application from your career center.
  7. Compile and submit a completed application including letters of recommendation, transcript of record, and SAT scores.  See your counselor for details.
  8. Watch your deadline.  Applications must be postmarked by November 15 and will not be accepted if late.
